Have copied most of the below from the Welcome forum to this one as it is probably more appropriate now

Have changed the wiring and the modem is now wired direct to the master socket and these are my line stats now

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 16 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 14 db 30 db

Do these figures look OK now?

There is still some background noise on the phone. Any ideas how to tackle this? All the phones run off one line from the adsl splitter so do they still need filters now or will the initial microfilter be enough?
Thanks
Ricardo

You didn't say you'd moved into the exchange, Ricardo ;)

As long as you produce stats like those - you've gone from one extreme to the other - I wouldn't care a hoot what noises you can hear on the phones. All you want is for the filter you've got to keep the phone noise away from the ADSL signal. Just enjoy the connection you'll have with those terrific stats. Leave yourself connected to the master socket, the extension wiring must be like wet string, and probably the cause of the noise on the phones.

Think I have got rid of the noise on the phone line. It seemed to only affect one phone so I have altered its wiring/filter arrangement and it seems to have worked.
Thanks to all for their help and comments. It's good to know that there is this type of help and advice available.
