View Full Version : Training over - Can I get any more speed?
Ok I've been with ADSL24 for two weeks so I assume my training period is over whereby my sync speed have hardly risen over 760kbs and is currently 640 - I know my line is unlikely to sustain 2mb but is there any point in trying to see if we can raise the max speed closer to 1mb or will it be a waste of time?

Could you post the stats (sync speed, attenuation and SNR) from your router please?
Data Rate:640/448
Line rate:736/544
Attenuation: Local:63.5 Remote:29.5
SNR Margin: Local: 6.5 Remote: 5

Your downstream attenuation is very high. Have you tried connecting your modem/router to the test socket at the back of the master socket?

Tried before once The master test socket is completely dead - there are no wires attached to it - just to the face plate connector - I suspect it was tampered with by a previous occupant of my house.

The only way you're likely to be able to get better speeds is to improve your internal wiring.
how far away from your local exchange are you???
I know where it is - a mile or two maybe Not sure.
Sam Knows says;
According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 2Mbps or greater ADSL connection.
It wa saying 512k or greater the previous tme I checked.

What does the BT Wholesale Checker at http://www.btwholesale.com/getbroadband say?
It should also say, "Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6.5Mbps up to 8Mbps".
otherwise, wait for your local exchange to get upgraded.

----------------
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 2Mbps or greater.

Your line is probably not that good, but as I said earlier, improving your internal wiring might give you better speeds.

I can't tamper wit the internal master socket can I? - What improvemements can I actually make other than buying a more expensive cable? I guess I can try playing around with my extension cables or try a direct cable to see if it makes any difference.

Take a look at http://dslzoneuk.net/socket.php and http://www.readman.dsl.pipex.com/other/UKphonecatwiring.htm.
Thanks I will take a closer look.
Tried running a direct cable filtered from master socket to modem. No better.Supposed I'm stuck with it unless there some super cable that will make the difference.

Try direct to master with no filter (or phones) just to check that you are doing it right. A better cable usually seems to make no difference. Test your setup at http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks (Tweak Tester II) then use Dr. TCP (program and FAQ on same site) to set MTU (Try 1500) and RWIN (Try 65535) if needed. I replaced my USB modem with a cheap router from dsldepot which surprised me by upping my speed on my bad line from 1.9Mbps to 2.8Mbps.
try downloading 'TCP Optimizer' at
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
run the .exe file; select 'optimal settings' and reboot.

I wouldn't assume anything in that case! I can highly recommend the ADSL Nation XF-1e - it's generally considered one of the best filters on the market.
I'll second that recommendation for the XF-1e, which I use. It's important to remember, though, that any filter can become faulty, so I swap out my filters on occasion if I'm having problems to exclude them as the possible cause.
Ircsum.
I've got a couple of others , One bought from EFH./Solwise I'll swap them over.
