I cannot connect to certain sites such as ebay and gmail.
Also cannot log in to windows messenger or msn group sites.
This all started this morning.
I have done all the usual tricks like rebooting everything and using specific dns
I believe other users (EFH/186) have been having problems
Also, I cannot post to some sites but obviously I can to this one.
Any ideas please.

Have you checked your MTU & RWIN settings?

edit: Check this (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/tweak2.htm) out; also this (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/695) one.

Although 1492 is recommended for here I found 1478 improved my download speed by40-50 KB/sec, so it's really worthwhile finding what's best for your particular connection.

Screammmmmmmmmmm!
I have PC and a laptop.
The PC is connected to the router via a LAN
The laptop uses wireless
Before changing ISPs, I had some problems and manually selectd DNS server addresses on the PC LAN connection. The Laptop stayed on auto.
When I changed ISP three weeks or four weeks ago, I started to get connectivity problems with the PC but not the laptop. somewhe
Yesterday, I had problems with the PC but not the laptop. I changed the MTU setting on the router from the default 1500 to 1492 as advised.
I subsequently started having problems with the laptop and it was not till you posted last night that I remembered that I had changed the MTU setting.
I went back to the default setting and all seems ok.
I have now set the LAN DNS address to auto.
If the old DNS settings were for EFH/186 would this have caused my intermittent connectivity problems?

Not really sure about the EFH/186 DNS servers....it's possible they restrict usage to a specified IP range, I suppose; anything in your DNS cache will still work fine.

AFAIK your router MTU should be left at the default 1500, just the MTU in Windows to be adjusted accordingly. If the MTU in the router is too low you'll get packet collision with consequent loss of speed.

Have to admit I'm a little hazy about the whole subject. Main thing is not to make anything worse than it should be. ;)

On the router, should the Configure Connection Type Protocol be set to:

PPPoA or PPPoE

Does it make any difference?

PPPoA for ADSL in this country....but the other may work too.

Glad all is well again.
'Enthusiastic' firewall settings can sometimes cause problems accessing sites.

my MTU setting is 1500. There is this nice little utility to have a play with.

If I were to start using OpenDNS settings, would I change these settings on both my PC and router?

Just the PC is fine....easier to put them in there anyhow.
