View Full Version : Are Routers Country Specific ?
I just bought a SpeedTouch 780WL router at eBay. Item location on the auction page said, Edinburgh. But when paying at PaPal I noticed that the seller is in Poland.
Does the routers have different spec in different countries? Do they need to be made to BT standards and be BT approved to be used in this country?

Lesson 1 with Ebay, always, but always, check out the seller or buyer before committing to a bid. No idea about the specification other than you might need a different power supply or an adaptor if the router is for that country - they have two pin sockets.
It's a legal requirement that any telephony device which you intend connecting to a BT system must have that funny "approved" sticker on them somewhere.
Odds on if the person was selling via Ebay UK though that you'll be fine, I once - and only once -accidentally bought from an american. There was no problem, the goods where held and shipped in this country.
Assuming you can connect it you'll probably be o.k. Check which version of the firmware it's using. If it's a European version you'll probably need to change a couple of settings.

Got the SpeedTouch 780WL this morning via Royal mail Special Delivery. It is his first sale at eBay. Must have wanted to create a good impression. Looks like new. It came in a red box labelled Virgin Broadband Wireless Kit. So should be okay for use in the UK. :)
CD-ROM, number of cables, filters, adaptors were all there but no 'Quick Installation Guide'. No .pdf files on the CD either. May be I will find them at one of the SpeedTouch URLs.
All sorts of other numbers on the case but no version number. Anyway of telling what it is? Then I can download the right files.
Cheers!

You need a quick guide? Plug in the power supply, connect the Ethernet cables, switch the thing on, run the CD, follow the instructions ;)
You should find there's a "Quick-Installation Wizard" on the menu which appears when you first run the disk.
All the SpeedTouch PDF's are web based now so you just go to their site and get all the user guides and firmware from them.
If you connect the router and type 10.0.0.138 in a browser you will/should get the routers interface.
User name is admin(sometimes Administrator)
Password is admin ........unless your seller left it set up for his connection.
If he has left any settings on it some models have a factory reset switch hidden on the back panel.

Seller from Poland…
Might be a polish person living in Edinburgh “lot of them about” and selling on ebay then sending the money he makes home to his polish bank account
Thomson seem to have abandoned the 10.0.0.X range for their current kit, in favour of 192.168.1.X. The router addy would then be 192.168.1.254, default login: Administrator, default pass: (blank).

Grey, "Quick-Installation Wizard" seem to be tweaked for connecting to Virgin Media. I got the thing working now after messing around with 'network connections' in win xp. Haven't sorted out security, so using the 'yellow' cable for the time being.
Info by Adrian has proved very helpful thanks. 10.0.0.138 worked but will also try out 192.168.1.X and 192.168.1.254 Ircsum suggested.
Thank everyone .... :)

My router ius a Billion BiPac 7202 and that is the same IP for the login on that.
@BlueMax....if 10.0.0.138 worked, then 192.168.1.254 won't. Suggests to me that the router may have out of date firmware on it, so check to see if there's a later one available from the Speedtouch site....if so, the latter IP should be the correct one for a newer version.

And....if you've not done a firmware update before, seriously consider whether you realy need to do one now. I ran one in to my new 585 and produced and wonderful, black plastic housebrick with no effort at all. No boot, no access, no response to factory reset,no nothing. It was in the bin, but for some reason - the fact it was a day old probably - the nest day I tried just once more and...tadaaa....back from the dead! Not touching it again, it works, it'll do for me Harold.
From what I seen at SpeedTouch URLs these are the SpeedTouch ST780WL Releases:
5.4.0 - Feb 06
Software Release 6.1.0 - June 06
6.1.9 - Sep 06
6.2.0 -
6.2.F - Jan 07
6.2.G - Feb 07 - latest model
Found out that the one I have is
Software Release: 6.1.7.2
Does it mean that I can bring my router to 6.2.G standard by running a few software and firmware downloads?
I still can't install software from the Virgin CD. Sometimes it rejects username password. Tried what Adrian suggested with some luck. Did many resets, tried ' Administrator' 'Admin' with and without capital 'A'.
Can't get to configure the routers firewall. Somehow manged to set encryption to WPA PSK. Also got the good old ZoneAlarm. So using the wireless at last.
Downloaded Installation and Setup Guide and User Guide. Lot to read in there. Don't know much about firmware upgrades right now, but will get there one of these days.

I don't think the user interface will work properly on IE7, try FireFox to allow pass/username
Opened Firefox, went to http://192.168.1.254 and logged in using
User name: Administrator
Password: admin
then it let me change the password :)
Found that Firewall was already set to 'Standard'. So left it as it is.
Almost there!
Hi BlueMax
For the latest UK drivers and pdf user manual:
http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/codepages/content3.asp?c=7&ProductID=528
Like Robbie said try firefox and use the following to login
http://speedtouch.lan or http:// 192.168.1.254 by default
The default user is ‘Administrator’ and the default password is blank.
5.3.2 SpeedTouch™ Easy Setup
Easy Setup Wizard The Easy Setup Wizard helps you to configure your SpeedTouch™ Internet

SpeedTouch™
Hope this helps
Cliff
Many thanks everyone. Got it working and fully configured. :)
I stiil would have been struggling without your advice and tips.
Would have never gussed, for example, that interface can be accessed online or then again only via Firefox.
The CD has an installation guide but the one at Speedtouch URLs has more info. I have downloaded the User Guide also.
Don't have courage right now to attempt hardware/ software upgrades; but will have a go sometime.
Noticed that download speeds are about 500 Kbps less than with SpeedTouch 330 USB modem. Disabling firewall in the router made no difference.
