View Full Version : migrating over to asdl

Hi there, bear with me I'm new to this lark.
I am seriously considering migrating with my mac code to asdl24. As I already have a BB and modem connection from another sorce (via cd installation). How does the migration effect my installation. In other words do I do nothing at all and it all happens majically. Do I have to uninstall my cd installation, or keep that in place and asdl24 use that.
Sorry to be a bit of a pain here to try and explain this, never had BB until last April. I assume asdl24 dont supply an installation cd this is what I am trying to say, does my existing user cd work with asdl24.
I know I would have to change my username and password, and not at all sure where I would do this.
Thanks.
You will just need to change login details. Its very painless. :D
Check that your modem is capable of supporting MAX/ ADSL 2, if not, you can pick up a router/modem cheaply enough. Wireless routers are the in thing at the moment, but you can use them wired only if you don't have anything wireless, if you know what I mean
ps. You change your details on the GUI ( user interface) for your modem. Accessing this depends on the model you have.

How do I check my modem for MAX/ADSL 2.
I have a Sagem Fast 800
I have a Sagem Fast 800
.......as supplied by Tiscali, I take it :D . Its not gonna be up to it I'm afraid. (but I could be wrong)
You could do worse than get a Speedtouch 585. They are available for £30 from DSLDepot --->> http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=641 (http://www.adsl24.co.uk/forum/redirector.php?url=%68%74%74%70%3a%2f%2f%77%77%77% 2e%64%73%6c%64%65%70%6f%74%2e%63%6f%2e%75%6b%2f%70 %72%6f%64%75%63%74%5f%64%65%74%61%69%6c%73%2e%61%7 3%70%3f%69%64%50%72%6f%64%75%63%74%3d%36%34%31)

Oh dear so this is more headache for me, never installed a new modem before only the one from tiscali.
Better hold off my mac code until I can get round this.
Its easy........shame you have to shell out to upgrade.
I'm pretty sure that your sagem will not cope with max though, I had one ages ago, it was alright with a 2mb connection, but I got myself a router long before I went on max. Maybe someone will tell me I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
Please don't let me put you off, but its best to find out now rather than when you migrate.
raceylady

Yes this is what exactly I am trying to do, before I do it.
Thats why I asked the questions about changing my username and password, and if the tiscali cd installation modem would work. If I need to get another modem, does the cd installation still stay as it is.
Hi raceylady
Welcome to Forum:D
Yes it is possible to connect with your setup...I see you use a USB connection, if it is an oldish computer you may not have a Lan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_area_network) connection socket on your motherboard
If this was the case you would have to install a card in the PC to use a LAN router.
Below are some links on setting up your router.. have a look at the PDF link
sagum800/840 FAQ (http://www.sagem.com/support/site/modele_fax.php?page=livret)
PDF on instalation (http://www.sagem.com/support/site/livret/288021413-03.pdf)
Hope this helps... keep posting if you need more info.

No its a new comp. November last year. Dell with pentium D dual core.
Thanks for the help-out Cliff :D
TBH raceylady, I can't find anything that says you cannot use your modem .......fingers crossed eh? :o
ps. BTW here is how to find your modem stats.;
Sagem
F@st 800/840Click on Start, then Programs, then SAGEM F@st 800-840 and finally DSLMON. This will open up a small status window. On the keyboard, press and hold the ALT + D keys and another window will appear with your line stats
I'm going back to bed rofl
Many router now come supplied with a installation cd netgear, linksys, d-link
The benefits of using a router over a modem is the added security most have a built in firewalls
Better stability plus you will be able get the full benefit of using MaxDSL up to 8Mb

sorry how do I take a screen shot
Press Alt key + Print Screen key (it might say prt sc sysrq its the key next to the F12 key top row) together to capture the active window
Select Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint. The Paint application opens.
Press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot into Paint.
If you receive a message that says: "The image in the clipboard is larger than the bitmap. Would you like the bitmap enlarged?" click Yes.
Select File > Save As. The Save As dialog opens.
In the Save in field, select a location to save the file, such as your Desktop.
In the File name field, type in a name for the bitmap.
In the Save as type field, select .bmp, .gif, or .jpg.
Click Save.
Save as jpg

OK hope this works.
How come thats so small
Hi raceylady
Would you have any objections to buying a new all in one router. The segam would be doing your connection an injustice using the USB. if it were a Dell E520 or something like this then it would certainly have a Lan.
Having a router would give you a firewall between your PC and the outside world.
Alot of people on Enternet all seem to be using B-stock Speedtouch 585 v6 (http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/index.asp?). £26.00+ postage.
You would have alot of help on setting this popular router.
I have a Netgear DG834GT

Would the firewall affect my existing firewall with McAfee. I thought it wasn't wise to have two working at the same time.
Will look into the router as I have no idea really how they work.

Hi Cliff
(sorry for butting in your thread raceylady, and welcome to ADSL24 :) )
I have the DG834G v2 router, so in what way does yours differ to mine and should I be looking to upgrade it anytime soon as I've had it 2-3 years now.
raceylady
10/02/2007, 20:23
Have another go.
Your routers firewall is seperate to your PC... It will not conflict, infact you will have double protection. The McAfee will help your computer from detecting anything in the computer that is trying to send info out that was not allowed permission from you.
Cliff:)
A router firewall would not interfere with your software McAfee firewall they would both work together ok
Problems can occur with you try to run two software firewalls

Mine's got extra knobs on:D
The DG834GT is 2 years old... 108 Mbps Super Wireless ADSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch. And can use the DMT tool for tweaking your line connection. Your version cannot because of the chipset inside.
The speedtouch 585 V6 can use this DMT tool, and everyone on Enternet seems to be buying it, and at £26.00, its worth a try.
This tool improves your connection stats, increasing your download speeds and also gives you a more stable line in most cases.
Has your router got the latest firmware...Ver 3.01.31(UK)
DG834v2 (http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/dg834v2.asp)
The next generation of routers are of the MIMO...N type. G,a/b will be old hat soon.

I know someone else who is using the Sagem on an 8mb and it is working ok, will this be the same on adsl24
Would it not just be best for raceylady to try to connect with her present modem and see what happens?
http://www.sagem.com/index.php?id=182&L=0
If you need any more info look at our other Enternet Forum.. you will find all the rest of the community who use other resellars of Enternet.
We all try to help each other....Alot of help can be found on the speedtouch 585 and the use of the DMT tool. If you find you are not that interested in the techie side..you do not have to use the DMT tool.

If you look at my first post (http://www.adsl24.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=1455&postcount=8) I said it is Possible...I would give it a go with your Segum 800. But if it was giving you any problems i was suggesting an alternative as mentioned by Robbie's post (That was a cheap option).
If you need any help setting it up we will gladly assist you all the way. Brian James MD is on 0800 0432 101.

I didn't realise they'd brought out an upgrade so have just done that, but not sure it was completely successful as I'm now getting an error 404 on the message pane on the right :o
BTW, is the speedtouch wireless?
Hi SC

Just been doing some looking at the asdl24 modem settings, and checked mine on the sagem and they are the same requirements to what asdl24 need. So I hope and assume I am ok with this to kick me off for the time being, until I am more settled in.
But perhaps I ought to email support and ask them if its ok first.

Hey where do all these cool smilies come from:)
surfer_chick
11/02/2007, 19:48
All mine are ones I've collected over the years and stuffed into a file on my PC, mainly nicked from other people, but I did trawl some websites looking for some a couple of years ago.
I might still have some sites bookmarked, I'll go look :)
Found some! :D

http://www.longdog.karoo.net/smilies.htm
http://smiley.onegreatguy.net/
The big smilies come from a site called Smiley Central I think, but there was a problem with viruses on that site some time ago so I never took the risk of using it and just nicked the ones other people posted ;)

Just a query here, hopefully getting my mac code today. I have at present installation by tiscali cd, on migration day what happens with this cd installation, does it stay and I use it, but it will be asdl24.
How do I change my username and password, as I assume there will be no installation disc from asdl24.
Very new to this, haven't done it before. Thanks

The disc would be better used as an ash tray:p
You will find in your network preferences, properties..etc. the IP address, username and password can be setup.
We will have to get Brian to create a tutorial for users who have not made the transition to a Router.
Again we will help you further when ready it would be pointless disturbing your setup till you are ready to switch over.

Hi
Newby. Hopefully getting my MAC from Tiscali tomorrow, on a promise from Tiscali support. Like RaceyLady, I hope to xfer to adsl24.
Let's se if Tiscali will do the right thing! On time!!!
Having read through much of this thread, it does pose the question as to whether the MD of Tiscali could ever contribute to Tiscali forums as with the adsl24 MD. LOL
Hope to be with you soon
