View Full Version : Worth while trying business package for this?

I've recently had my line "retrained". This was because of a discrepancy between my synch (8128) and my profile (6500 - a leftover from synch with interleaving at 7616). Before the retrain I used to synch with a SNRM of 9.50 to 10.0 and it never dropped below 6.5

Since the retrain I synch at a level that will keep my profile at 6500, but only if I reboot the router between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. (currently 7680) as my SNRM for most of the day is below 6.0 (range 6.5 to 4.5).

It seems to me that BT, rather than fix the problem with my profile, have instead modified the noise level on my line so that I cannot synch at a level that will give me a profile higher than 6500. Maybe that's paranoia speaking, but that's what the end result looks like to me.

Now, I don't have a thorough knowledge of the ins and outs of ADSL but it seems to me that, if BT are in any way keeping my synch damped, it can only be via the port on my line card at the exchange. So, to the question:

If I change to a business package (given that business is supposed to have priority over home at the exchange) will my line be moved to a different port/line card? This might just get me away from my present situation and I'm willing to pay the extra for a month or two if there's a real prospect of it doing the trick. Maybe I'll do it anyway. ;)

Anybody got any thoughts on my "master plan"? BTW, Enta support aren't interested in this, maybe they think I have an overactive imagination. :)

I don't really see how BT could have modified the noise level on your line TBH. Have you tried all of the usual things to reduce it? It's strange that there's more noise on your line during the day, as that's the opposite of most people's lines.

Im glad you answered that Tim :) LOL

Ring wires cut, extension rewired last summer. I tried it in the test socket a few days back. Things are definitely worse since the retraining, I even get upstream HECs & CRCs now, something I rarely saw before.

My line is underground, btw.

Enta support said a while back it was my synch that was stuck, not my profile....couldn't follow that as profile is supposed to follow synch. I had interleaving jammed in the 'on' position for months, synch was 7616; as soon as it came off in December I synched at 8128 but my profile stayed at 6500, as it was with interleaving on. BT bridged the gap between synch & profile, but not the way I wanted them to - they brought the roof down rather than raising the floor. :)

Used to synch ay 8128, margin of 9.5 or 10.0, not any longer. :(

I'll try in the test socket again when I'm up at an appropriate hour; don't want to resynch during the day, for obvious reasons.

Well.....looks like the problem is this end, not with BT.

I poked at the wires in the master socket last night (on my knees, with a torch) - they all seemed fine, none touching another, etc. Came back to the comp where I'd been running DMT and saw my 'poking' had caused 8 losses of frame & 2 losses of signal, plus the HEC & CRC error count had jumped sharply. The SNRM had altered sharply in both directions also. Decided 'to hell with it' and rebooted the router (margin was a little over 6) and came back at 7680 again. That was at 12.30 a.m.

This morning I find the error count (HEC & CRC) down sharply on the last few days. Margin was holding close to 6.5 but dropped 15% at 7.15 a.m.; it's just recovered two thirds of that loss. I know I can expect another drop at 1.15 p.m.

The only things on timers here are the central heating & hot water - neither is set to go on or off at either 7.15 a.m. or 1.15 p.m., so I'm a bit stumped there.

Anyhow, looks like there's something amiss in the master socket so I'll get someone who knows a bit more about things to look at it soon. Really weird that this should happen at the same time as the retraining as everything was fine from the rewiring last August until the past week or so.

Time to give my 'BT paranoia' a rest, I think. :)

Talking to myself again :)

Margin slipped to 4.5 this afternoon, as expected (synch was 7680) so I decided to try the test socket again. Synched @ 7424, just a hair above the minimum required for a 6500 profile, so it looks as though this is the best I'm going to get.

At least the fiddling last night got rid of the upstream errors completely, so something had gone wrong, now accidentally fixed. :)

Back to wondering about a change to a business package now. :D :D :D

I wonder what your going to worry over now your a dab hand at fixing connections :)

Want a job!

Glad your happy and fixed.

Thought I'd dust this one off before burying it forever. Seems the issue is as rare as hens' teeth (hence the weird looks I got anywhere I took it). However, as it now seems to be solved it may be of help to some poor soul to hear the final chapter of the story.

Enta support were less than helpful. They stated that BT were no longer doing anything with my line once the retraining finished. Further, they told me my line should never have synched constantly at 8128 and the reason my profile remained at 6500 was because this was all my line could support.

I had 4 weeks of seeing a slump of >40% in the noise margin each day, generally for 2 hours (at different times) in the afternoon or evening. I tried the DMT tool once, dropping the target margin enough to get a synch of a fraction over 8,000. My profile was up to 7000 almost immediately, with speeds to match (at 3-5 a.m.) but I was unable to open a web page during the day, so returned to the default margin.

On Feb 28th I noticed a forced resynch in the afternoon and my heart sank...after all, afternoons often saw my margin as low as 2.5....but on checking I found I'd resynched at 8128, with a margin of 6.0. Within a short time I had another forced resynch, again at 8128, this time with a margin of 9.0. Left it like that for 2 days before deciding to reboot the router. It refused to desynch twice, had to power it down. Resynched at 8128 again, margin 9.5.

Midday today I tried the BT speed test and got this:

.....the profile I should have had after interleaving was removed on December 7th.

And I hope to live happily ever after. :D

THE END.
